He started his journalism career in 1992 as a freelance writer for Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Germany’s largest daily national newspaper and soon specialised in air transport. Jens joined Aviation Week and Aviation Daily in 2000 as one of the European correspondents. Later his role was expanded to cover international air transport. In 2013 he was named Managing Editor Commercial.
Jens frequently appears on radio and TV to comment on industry matters. In 2003, he received the Hugo Junkers Award of the German aviation press for his coverage of Fairchild Dornier’s bankruptcy. He was named the country’s top travel and air transport writer by the Travel Industry Club three times. Jens graduated from the Munich School of Journalism.
Lufthansa and Air Berlin will claim damages from Berlin Airports to compensate for the delayed opening of Berlin Brandenburg International Airport (BBI). The airport company last week conceded that the planned June 3 opening date for BBI cannot be maintained, with CEO Rainer Schwarz citing issues with the terminal fire protection system. Numerous reports have since indicated that other aspects of the projects also are lacking, and according to one article, the airport’s completion is two months behind schedule.
International Airlines Group (IAG) expects its financial performance to fall to breakeven this year as the deteriorating performance of Iberia, high fuel costs and the integration of BMI pressure a company that recorded a €485 million (US$626.7 million) operating profit in 2011.
The integration of BMI into British Airways will occur “as soon as possible,” with a first tranche of BMI flights to be sold on May 23 and a second following in June, says BA CEO Keith Williams.
