Jeff has been involved in aerospace journalism since the mid 1990s. Prior to joining Aviation Week, Jeff served as managing editor of Launchspace magazine and the International Space Industry Report. He has been the editor and chief of Aviation Week's Aerospace Daily & Defense Report since 2007 and has been a regular contributor to Aviation Week magazine. He received his B.A. from the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va.
NASA's Glenn Research Center has awarded contracts to 11 companies to perform research aimed at more efficient, safe, and environmentally friendly propulsion systems for future aircraft and space vehicles. Awarded in support of the Ultra Efficient Engine Technology (UEET) Program, Propulsion and Power Program, and Advanced Space Transportation Program, the contracts for this five-year procurement effort are indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity, cost-plus-incentive-fee contracts with a possible total value of $197 million.
Saying America's national security is "in jeopardy," the Navy League recommends expanding the U.S. carrier fleet and increasing the Navy role in missile defense. Bulking up the carrier fleet to better allow the Navy to fulfill its responsibilities around the world is particularly necessary in light of U.S. military base closures overseas, according to James Offutt, chairman of the Navy League Resolutions Committee.
Competitors Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and Raytheon are awaiting the final contract award for the Air Force's Advanced Targeting Pod (ATP) program, expected on or about July 23. Planned for installation on Block 30 and 50 F-16s, the winning ATP concept could also see service on Block 40 F-16s, Boeing F-15Es and Fairchild A-10 attack planes.
