In the second round of Space Launch Initiative (SLI) awards, NASA is looking for research proposals on propulsion, flight demonstrations, and NASA-unique projects such as life support, crew safety, integrated ground testing, and simulations, according to the aerospace agency. After careful review of the first round of proposals, this second round is intended to fill "gaps in proposals, or ... where needs were assessed, and we really needed more input in those areas," NASA Spokeswoman June Malone told The DAILY.
The success of long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) may be shifting focus away from ship-based UAVs for oceangoing applications, according to Daryl Davidson, executive director of the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI). "If the Navy is any indication, doing away with Fire Scout (DAILY, Dec. 11, 2001), and looking more toward the high-altitude systems, you could probably make an argument that the success of Predator and Global Hawk are shifting some of the ideas," Davidson told The DAILY.
When NASA's Space Technology 5 (ST-5) mission demonstrates satellite formation flight techniques 2004, it will open the door for numerous ambitious science missions, according to Russell Carpenter, lead navigation and flight dynamics engineer for formation flight at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.
