The satellite was proposed by India Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014 to provide a full range of applications and services to India’s south Asian neighbors.

India is working to increase the number of its satellite launches to 12 per year from about the current eight.

The satellite features 12 Ku-band transponders to provide assistance in telemedicine, tele-education, crop productivity and disaster management to the South Asia region.
