India on May 5 launched the South Asia Satellite, aimed at meeting the growing telecommunications and broadcasting needs of India and six of its regional neighbors.

The satellite was proposed by India Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014 to provide a full range of applications and services to India’s south Asian neighbors.

India is working to increase the number of its satellite launches to 12 per year from about the current eight.
