Hainan Airlines parent HNA Group will further diversify its sprawling business by building a 450 million yuan (US$66 million) airport in northeastern China in partnership with a metals trading firm. The airport, at Yingkou in the province Liaoning, will have an initial capacity between 150,000 and 300,000 people a year, rising to between 3 million and 5 million. HNA’s partner is China Minmetals Corp.
Labor unions at Japan Airlines will strike on Wednesday and Thursday, but the airline says their action will force the cancellation of only about 2% of domestic services and no international services. Dissatisfied with the company’s proposed yearend bonus, unions representing pilots, cabin crew and other employees will strike on Wednesday. Another pilots union will strike on Wednesday and Thursday. The airline will use non-union pilots to keep flying.
Japan is making new moves to open up access to Haneda, with London following Paris in getting access to the facility, the most conveniently located of Tokyo’s two main airports. Britain and Japan have agreed that one British and one Japanese airline will each be allowed a single return daily flight from Haneda to London from October 2010, after the airport is expanded with completion of a fourth runway.
