The Royal Australian Air Force is intensifying its lobbying for an order of 100 Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightnings, a number that has received official endorsement but could be scaled back next year. An initial Australian order is expected after the release of a defense white paper in 2009. The choice of the F-35 as Australia’s next fighter is defended by the chief of the air force, Air Marshal Mark Binskin. He argues it will be part of an integrated airpower system on which the country could not improve.
All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines will voluntarily participate in a trial of a Japanese emissions trading scheme. Japan Airlines is giving itself a target of cutting its 2010-2012 carbon dioxide emissions per seat to 84% of its 1990 level.
China Eastern Airlines has followed rival China Southern in getting a 3 billion yuan (US$440 million) recapitalization from the government, although the money seems to be only a down payment on the funding that the massively indebted company needs. The government is paying the money to China Eastern’s state-owned parent, which in turn is using it to buy new shares in the company.
