Recapitalization of Thai Airways International looks assured following the government’s endorsement of a restructuring plan that it demanded as a condition for further financial support. The airline, often criticized for chronic overstaffing, is suggesting how it could improve its operating performance—for example, by cutting costs—in anticipation of replenishing its capital.
Avic has increased its investment in Joy Air, the subsidiary that it set up with China Eastern to operate aircraft from Avic’s manufacturing units. China Eastern transferred a 35% holding in Joy Air to Avic without payment, reducing its ownership to 5%.
Chinese aerospace conglomerate Avic is seeking foreign executives as its next step toward becoming a top-tier global aircraft builder. Foreigners are being sought even for the company’s Defense Div., as well as the specialist subsidiaries it is setting up for civilian markets. The foreigners will be among 13 VPs hired for marketing, research, asset management and other responsibilites.
