Malaysian Airline System followed Cathay Pacific in posting a profit based entirely on fuel hedging gains. The carrier made 876 million ringgit (US$250 million) in the three months to June 30. But since that included a 1.3 billion ringgit gain on fuel hedging contracts, operations continued to lose money. The airline lost 695 million ringgit in the first quarter, including fuel hedging losses of 640 million.
Qantas, once an enthusiastic supporter of airline consolidation, won’t merge with another carrier for at least 10 years, predicts CEO Alan Joyce. “It's going to take a lot longer than we originally thought,” says Joyce. “It's still the way the industry will go, but I'm not sure it's going to be in the next few years. It's going to be 10 years-plus.” Qantas and British Airways tried but failed to negotiate a merger last year. Joyce says Qantas learned from the experience that such combinations are hard to achieve.
