AirAsia has formally terminated a dormant plan to set up an affiliate in Vietnam with shipbuilder Vinashin. The letter of intent between the two has expired, says AirAsia. The deal with Vinashin already looked improbable, since the Vietnamese government effectively blocked the proposal in 2008 by telling Vinashin and other state companies to concentrate on their core activities.
First-quarter financial results for China Eastern show little sign that management is fixing the ever-struggling network carrier. A net profit of 1.174 billion yuan (US$172 million), compared with 1.172 billion yuan a year earlier, may seem to be an improvement. But the airline had an abysmal underlying performance highlighted by a 16% fall in revenue to 17.5 billion yuan (US$2.6 billion) — despite a 20% rise in air travel in the same period.
BACK ON: South Korea has rescheduled the first launch of its first space rocket for Aug. 19, following a delay caused by a diagnostic error during testing. Data showing a malfunction on a pump in the Russian-built first stage of the KSLV-1 rocket have been found to be erroneous. A launch was previously scheduled for Aug. 11 (Aerospace DAILY, Aug. 4, 10).
