United Airlines is seeing encouraging signs from its routes across the Pacific, a traditionally strong section of its international network.

Malaysian composite parts specialist CTRM is investing in new technology to attract future airliner programs with its lower labor costs, moving away from design work it finds too cyclical. Focusing on finding a process for curing composites without an autoclave, it is studying two technologies, one with Airbus and the other with Australian company Quickstep. CTRM is a strategic partner of both Spirit Aerosystems and Goodrich for composite elements of the 787 and leading edge parts of the Airbus A350.

Japan Airlines will abandon freighter operations in October, relying instead on airliner bellies for its cargo business. The giant bankrupt carrier, in the midst of a state-directed restructuring and bailout, will increase code sharing with British Airways, a partner in the oneworld alliance, and with Jetstar, the budget subsidiary of oneworld member Qantas.
