China Southern forecasts an improved operating performance after reporting a net profit of 330 million yuan (US$48 million) for 2009, reversing a 4.8 billion yuan loss a year earlier. Operating income for China’s biggest airline at the same time amounted to 1.44 billion yuan, again a reversal on the 5.6 billion yuan loss reported in 2008. Revenue fell less than 1% to 54.8 billion yuan.
At least 20 people suffered injuries when a Merpati Nusantara Airlines Boeing 737 overran a runway in heavy rain at Manokawi in Indonesia’s Papua province. The aircraft’s body was split open in the crash, the Associated Press says, quoting local officials. The injuries were mostly bruises with some broken bones. The aircraft was carrying 103 passengers and six crewmembers, according to reports.
