Jetstar, the low-cost arm of Australia's Qantas, will operate long-haul flights out of Singapore Changi Airport by year-end and is looking at destinations in North Asia, Australia and Southern Europe. The plan is to open the first route in December, when the first of two Airbus A330-200s to be based in Singapore arrives. A second route will follow when plane No. 2 arrives in early 2011, says Jetstar representative Simon Westaway. The destinations have not been determined.
Singapore-based budget carrier Tiger Airways has reported a profit of S$28.2 million for the year to March 31, reversing a loss of S$50.8 million a year earlier. The turnaround was mainly due to lower fuel costs and higher passenger numbers that took full-year revenue to S$486.2 million, up 28.6%. The airline is eyeing opportunities to launch new carriers within the region, says group president and CEO Tony Davis.
Tiger Airways says its low-cost carriers in Singapore and Australia carried 507,000 passengers in April, 45% more than a year ago. Average load factors increased 3 percentage points to 84%. In the 12 months ended in April, total passenger numbers hit a record 5.03 million, a 54% jump from the year before. The airline group, which has 19 aircraft, is expanding with seven more planes due to arrive in the fiscal year ending March 2011, says President and CEO Tony Davis.
