SIA Engineering Co. has posted a 12.8% increase in profits to S$73.9 million ($53.5 million) for the fourth quarter to March 31, reversing three quarters of falling earnings. Revenue for January to March grew 10.9% to S$272.6 million, primarily thanks to the company's fleet management program and airframe and component overhaul work, while expenditure was 5.6% higher at S$231.4 million. For the full year, the Singapore Airlines subsidiary reported a profit of S$236.1 million, 9.4% lower from a year earlier.
Thai Airways has reported a net income of 10.7 billion baht ($331 million) in the first quarter, compared with 7.9 billion baht that was recorded in the same period last year, due to a recovery in its passenger and freight business. The carrier's total revenue for January to March hit 49.8 billion baht, 20.7% higher while expenses increased 15.9% to 38.5 billion baht.
Tokyo Haneda Airport will open its fourth runway and new international passenger terminal on Oct. 21 and will begin handling scheduled international flights on Oct. 31, the transport ministry says. Japan Airlines will begin flying from the conveniently located airport to San Francisco, Honolulu, Paris, Bangkok and Taipei Songshan on Oct. 31, the airline says. The move confirms that Haneda is now a serious competitor to Tokyo Narita, which until now has had a near monopoly on international traffic to the city.
