Adrian is Auckland bureau chief for Aviation Week, based in New Zealand. He covers commercial aviation in the Asia-Pacific region.
Adrian was previously based in Aviation Week’s Washington office for nine years, writing for a range of the group’s publications and covering many aspects of the commercial aviation industry. He has won Australasian and international awards for his aviation writing.
Prior to joining Aviation Week in 2002, Adrian covered aviation industry and policy issues for two other publishing companies in Washington. He has also worked for newspapers in Texas and New Zealand, covering a wide range of topics. Adrian graduated from Auckland University with a degree in history and English in 1992.
The global airline industry is expected to see losses of about $9 billion this year — double the loss predicted less than three months ago — due to a projected revenue decline of $80 billion, according to new estimates from the International Air Transport Association.
New deliveries outweighed aircraft retirements by a large margin in April, which is helping slow the rate of international capacity reductions, according to the International Air Transport Association. The international airline fleet actually expanded by more than 100 aircraft in April, IATA estimates in a new report. Twenty-seven aircraft were retired, but 30 were taken out of storage and returned to service, and there were 109 new deliveries. This is a reversal of the trend seen late last year, when retirements and parked aircraft exceeded new deliveries.
Nav Canada said its traffic was down by an average of 8% in April, compared with the same month last year. For the fiscal year through the end of April, traffic was down 5.1% -- or 4.7% adjusting for the leap year. Nav Canada’s fiscal year runs through Aug. 31. Traffic is measured in weighted charging units.
