A UK-based group is proposing using stored widebody airliners as intensive care units as countries grapple to find hospital capacity to cope with the coronavirus pandemic.
With dozens of widebody aircraft now idle at airports around the world awaiting a return to regular airline operation, Project Caircraft is proposing stripping out economy cabins and fitting them out as hospital wards making use of aircraft’s existing infrastructure for oxygen, power and air flow systems that can help reduce the spread of the virus. The aircraft can also be hermetically sealed to contain a virus.
