Swazi government's VIP MD-87 seized for the second time
The Swazi government's VIP MD-87 has been seized by a Canadian court, after Singaporean businessman Shanmuga Rethenam secured a seizure order.
Rethenam is a former business partner of King Mswati III, and secured the order from a court in Toronto in order to recover USD8 million that he is owed.
He has claimed that he sold Mswati the aircraft and paid for modifications and refinancing totalling USD6.5 million.
The aircraft has been seized before, with Mswati paying USD3.5 million for its release.
A Swazi court has charged Rethenam with misappropriating funds for a mining business he operated with Mswati.
Rethenam has said that the case against him seems to be Mswati’s way of retaliating.
