Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport to be prepared for natural disasters

Deutsche Post DHL Group and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will perform a disaster preparedness programme at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport.

The Get Airports Ready for Disaster (GARD) programme aims to prepare airports to handle incoming relief goods in case of a natural disaster.
Mauritius is prone to natural disasters such as cyclones, making it important to enable the airport to provide support.
“During natural calamities, the airport becomes the centre for international support. The GARD program is coordinated jointly with national stakeholders – from airport authorities to emergency services such as the special mobile force, the police helicopter squadron and the security managers,” explained Rahman Bholah, country manager, DHL Mauritius.
GARD enables airports to prepare for natural disasters, and aid agencies to understand the process at the airport after the disaster, improving overall coordination.
GARD is provided free of charge, with workshop arrangement costs covered by UNDP.
