Rwanda and Senegal signed a Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) on Sept. 8 aimed at strengthening air connectivity, enhancing economic cooperation, and expanding trade opportunities between the two nations.
Speaking on behalf of Rwanda, Minister Gasore described the agreement as a “milestone” in the countries’ bilateral relations.
“This is a major step in promoting cooperation and reinforcing the excellent relations between our two countries,” he said.
Details regarding which airlines will operate flights under the agreement, and the specific routes to be served, have not yet been disclosed.
The move builds on close ties between Rwanda and Senegal, characterized by regular exchanges between heads of state and senior officials.
In February, President Paul Kagame of Rwanda met with Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye to discuss the upcoming bilateral agreement and regional security matters.
“We exchanged on the importance of continental collaboration toward a sustainable solution to the security situation in the region and beyond,” Kagame said.
RwandAir, established in 2002 and based at Kigali International Airport, currently serves 25 destinations across Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
Meanwhile, Air Senegal was founded by the Senegalese government in 2016 to replace the defunct Senegal Airlines. The carrier operates a fleet that includes Airbus A319s, A321s, A330-900s, ATR 72-600s, and Let L-410 aircraft, with the goal of transforming Blaise Diagne International Airport into a regional air hub as part of Senegal’s Emerging Senegal Plan.
