New Egyptian start-up backed by Saudi conglomerate

A Saudi conglomerate is backing a new airline to operate from Egypt

The Nesma Holding corporation from Jeddah is planning to branch into airline operations through a start-up carrier using Airbus A320s. It is expected to operate charter operations from Egypt and focus on flights for pilgrims to Medina from the region and Europe.

At least one aircraft - a former BMI A320 - has already been painted at Norwich in the UK in the colours of the carrier, branded Nesma Airlines.

The company’s name derives from National Engineering Services and Marketing. The organisation has interests in energy, telecoms and real estate to electronic equipment and catering. Among its operations is a travel organisation which specialises in holiday packages to Egypt.

Nesma Airlines is planning to begin operations from July this year. While it has not given any formal details network details yet, the holding group says the carrier will operate scheduled and charter services in Europe and the Middle East.
