BARCELONA—Liebherr Aerospace and Airbus executives signed the Digital Alliance partnership at Aviation Week Network’s MRO Europe and discussed improvements to the Skywise Fleet Performance+ tool they hope to make.

Liebherr joined the Digital Alliance for a couple of reasons. “We believe we are the best position as an OEM to develop the algorithm that will go into the predictive maintenance and we have a large repair activity of our components, so it has a vested interest in predictive maintenance,” says Joel Cadaux, director of business and services for Liebherr Aerospace & Transportation, at the Oct. 23 signing.

The more scheduled maintenance and less unscheduled maintenance that occurs the better, and that requires more predictive maintenance, he notes.

Airbus created the Digital Alliance in 2019 with Delta Tech Ops and then added GE Aerospace.

Adding Liebherr will “strengthen the capacity we have to improve the operational efficiency of our predictive maintenance tool,” says Claude Houver, head of digital solutions for Airbus.

The Digital Alliance strives to not just predict when maintenance will be needed, but also to incorporate materials management so the right parts are available when service is required. And given the supply chain challenges in the industry, that part might not necessarily be easy.

“Predictive maintenance avoids the parts failing, so the repair will be easier,” says Houver.

The Digital Alliance hopes to add other systems suppliers to continue building digital tools designed to help airlines avoid operational disruptions, he adds.

EasyJet avoided 80 flight cancellations this summer through the use of Skywise Fleet Performance+.
