Rosen Aviation customer success manager Justin Watson.
Rosen Aviation presented its new 4K smart map box, which improves both the quality and quantity of IFE system moving maps’ output, at the Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX) in Hamburg.
The Eugene, OR-based company, a longtime supplier to the business aviation market, is now marketing its latest product to the commercial aviation sector, with certification underway and expected to be complete by year’s end.
The 4K smart map box differs from other commercial IFE map options, Rosen’s customer success manager Justin Watson said, because it includes a smart television facility as well as the upgraded moving map display. The box contains the necessary digital rights management software to play copyrighted content from providers such as Netflix and Hulu from every seatback.
“We get a lot of requests from airlines that are upgrading one section of their aircraft, such as the business-class cabin, but don’t want to replace the entire [IFE] system,” Watson said. The box can store and run 4K moving map imagery locally; it does not need to be on the aircraft’s server.
The new box can be line-fitted to new aircraft, but Rosen sees it most likely being retrofitted to upgrade existing systems without the cost of a full system replacement: “We’ll start taking pre-orders in the next month or so.”
Rosen is also demonstrating a new cabin control solution that can handle functions such as heating, lighting, window shades and IFE.
