The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) is tasked with the sole mandate for planning, developing, managing, and maintaining civil airports in Ghana: Kotoka International Airport (KIA) in Accra (capital city) and five domestic airports. The vision and mission of GACL is to position Ghana as the Preferred Hub and Leader in Airport Business in West Africa, providing world class airport facilities and services for the benefit of stakeholders.

A new Terminal, Terminal 3, was commissioned for international flight operations at KIA in 2018. KIA was adjudged Best Airport by size and region (2 – 5 million passengers p.a.) in 2019, 2020 and 2021, in the Airports Council International (ACI) Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Award. KIA was the winner of the ACI Safety Award in 2022, for Excellence in Safety Management Systems for West Africa.

GACL has continued with infrastructural developments, upgrading two domestic airports in the second and third largest cities, Kumasi, and Tamale, to international status. The new Tamale International Airport Terminal was operationalized on 31^st July, 2023.  Kumasi International Airport will follow shortly.  These developments will expand route opportunities and air travel options to all parts of the world.

Recovering from the Covid-19 Pandemic, GACL is launching a second mixed-use Airport City 2 Project on 272 acres of land within the Airport enclave.

Key Route Opportunities

Route network expansion is a key objective of GACL’s Air Service Development strategy.  Kotoka International Airport currently connects directly to 28 destinations spanning Europe, North America, the Middle East and Africa. GACL has recently revised its incentive package to attract airlines to increase frequency and/or launch new routes.  Below are key routes for development areas:

1. Establishing direct connectivity to the Caribbean/South America. There is currently no direct air service to these regions. However recent interest in tracing ancestral roots and growing inquiries into business opportunities, is generating demand for shorter and direct connectivity.
2. Re-launching of the Accra–Dusseldorf route, an area with a high concentration of Ghanaian and West African nationals. Passenger traffic to Germany in 2022 was approximately 72,000 with more than 30% coming from Dusseldorf and surrounding states.
3. Opening of a 3^rd direct route into North America, via Canada. Passenger movements between Ghana and Canada was over 30,000 in 2022.
4. Developing international routes into the newly designated international airports, Kumasi & Tamale.
