EU sanctions against Afriqiyah are lifted to clear way for new merged Libyan carrier

European sanctions against Libya's Afriqiyah Airlines have been lifted following the country's political developments.

Libyan Airlines saw the EU sanctions lifted on September 4th.

The two airlines were cited in the EU sanctions as being owned by the Libyan African Investment Portfolio, an entity "owned and controlled by the regime".

The two carriers had been in the process of merging before the unrest broke out in Libya earlier this year and sources in Libya suggest this will now happen under the leadership of Afriqiyah boss Rammah Ettir but under a different name.
