Emirates puts cost of European cancellations at $10 million a day
Emirates Airline says the daily cost of the European flight disruption is around $10 million and has around 30 of its aircraft grounded.
The airline would normally generate revenue from around 18,000 passengers a day on European flights. The closure of European airspace, as a result of Icelandic volcanic ash,began on Thursday and will continue until at least tonight. Emirates president Tim Clark has estmates costs at over $50 million already. "The scale of this crisis is unlike anything I have experienced in my career," he said. "The longer it continues, the more complex the recovery process becomes. Like every carrier operating to Europe, Emirates is facing huge losses. These are losses which are coming straight out of our own pocket."
Emirates says it is spending $1 million per day accommodating some 6,000 passengers who were in transit at the beginning of the chaos.
