Bahrain 2012: Airbus A380 flies in for first time
The world's largest-capacity airliner landed in Bahrain for the first time yesterday as an Airbus A380 emerged through the midday haze on final approach to Sakhir Airbase.
The aircraft, one of Emirates Airline’s fleet of 20, arrived carrying UAE vice-president and ruler of Dubai, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
The arrival somewhat startled personnel at the Airbus chalet, who had not been told of the aircraft’s arrival.
“To be honest, we were surprised but very proud of its arrival,” said Hania Tabet, head of communications, Airbus Middle East. “It’s a great show of commitment to support the event.”
Spectators at the show’s opening day had a chance to admire the huge double-deck jet in the static display. The aircraft was expected to depart last night to resume commercial services for Emirates. The Dubai-based airline has orders and options for an eventual fleet of 100 of the type.
