Icelandic Startup Niceair Receives A319 In Time For June Launch

Iceland’s Niceair received a wet-leased Airbus A319 from Portuguese ACMI specialist Hi Fly on May 30, in time for the startup to launch its first flights as planned. Niceair CEO Thorvaldur Ludvik Sigurjonsson confirmed to Aviation Daily that flights will start June 2. “Our aircraft is being repainted in Maastricht [Netherlands],” Sigurjonsson said. “We will start with two times-weekly flights from Akureyri to Copenhagen on June 2.” Credit: Niceair

Singapore Airlines Looks To Capture Premium Travelers

Singapore Airlines (SIA) is positioning itself for a potential shift in traveling patterns of premium and high-net-worth customers through Singapore Changi airport, as the market shifts toward Southeast Asia. FAA Review Finds Nacelle Certification Requirements Are Sufficient

An FAA review of how nacelles are certified has concluded that the baseline regulations should not be changed—but manufacturers need better guidance on how to show their designs can stand up to fan-blade failures. The agency’s review, conducted in response to an NTSB recommendation, looked at both rules and guidance under its Part 25 that deal with “engine nacelles and containment case integrity following a fan blade out event,”—or broken fan blade that causes ancillary damage to surrounding structure. U.S. Airline Memorial Day Meltdown May Signal Challenging Summer

To many industry-watchers, the Memorial Day travel period was a stress-test to gauge whether U.S. airlines were prepared to handle an expected surge in leisure travel demand this summer. By nearly all accounts, they failed. U.S. carriers canceled nearly 7,000 flights between Thursday, May 26 and Tuesday, May 31, according to a report from Cowen analyst Helane Becker. Daily Memo: As U.S. Testing Requirements Remain In Place, Airlines Pay The Price

The unofficial start of summer is underway in the U.S., and airlines are feeling optimistic about their prospects for the busy summer travel season. But international demand continues to be crimped by pre-departure COVID-19 testing requirements to enter the U.S. Back in April, executives from Delta Air Lines were encouraged that pre-departure testing would be phased out in the near future. UK Passengers Face Disruptions Over Flight Cancellations

UK air passengers are facing disruptions during a busy school holiday week, as several airlines have had to cancel flights because of ongoing operational issues including staff shortages. TUI UK said May 31 it was canceling some flights from Manchester. “Unfortunately, due to ongoing challenges in our operation, we have had to announce a small number of planned cancellations between now and June 30 from Manchester Airport only,” it said. AAPA Chief: Russia-Ukraine War Greatest Threat To Airline Industry

A prolonged and potential escalation of Russia’s war in Ukraine is the biggest threat to the recovery of the aviation industry, the head of the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines said, adding the sector faces a “perfect storm” amid rising fuel costs, inflation, a food crisis and supply chain disruptions. “The biggest unknown now is if the conflict will be resolved or [if it] will escalate from a regional to global one,” Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) DG Subhas Menon told Aviation Daily. SAS Puts Pressure On Lessors In Restructuring Of Widebody Fleet

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) continues to face substantial structural cost challenges because its widebody fleet is not suited to the current market, according to the carrier’s CEO. The SAS widebody fleet comprises eight Airbus A330s and six A350s. Six of those twin-aisles are leased. Credit: Rob Finlayson
