China Remains Vague On MAX Service Resumption

China’s two largest airlines are not providing a clear roadmap on their future with the Boeing 737 MAX, offering no indications on when the aircraft may return to service, or even if they will take deliveries at all. Days after an ambiguous fleet update by China Southern Airlines chairman Ma Xulun to investors, China Eastern Airlines also updated shareholders that it has not taken the “required steps” to put the MAX aircraft back into the skies. Singapore Changi Partially Reopens Terminal 2 To Meet Peak Demands

To accommodate a potential surge in passenger handling demand in the coming months, Singapore’s Changi Airport will partially reopen Terminal 2 (T2) starting May 29. T2 has been shut since May 2020 at the height of the pandemic to fast-track an expansion and upgrade project. The first phase of T2’s progressive reopening will see the resumption of arrival immigration, baggage claim belts and contact gates at the southern wing. Credit: Changi Airport Group

Higher Fares Likely Weighed On U.S. Travel Demand In April

The ability of U.S. airlines to pass along higher costs for fuel and labor through increased fares may have hit its limit in April. Average domestic fares in the U.S. have increased by 53% so far since the start of the year, according to a May 22 report from Raymond James. Fares rose nearly 19% in April alone, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), after rising almost 11% in March. On an annual basis, fares in April were up 33% from April 2021, the highest year-on-year (YOY) gain recorded since 1980, according to the BLS. Credit: Justin Sullivan / Getty Images

Canadian Government To Conduct Review Of WestJet-Sunwing Deal

Transport Canada plans to conduct a public interest assessment of WestJet’s plans to acquire Sunwing Vacations and Sunwing Airlines. Calgary-based WestJet on March 2 announced its intent to purchase Toronto-based leisure travel company Sunwing. Under the plan, once the transaction closes a new tour-operating business will be created within the WestJet Group that includes its regional subsidiary Encore and its low-cost operation Swoop. Honeywell Readies GPS-Denied Navigation Systems For Market

Honeywell is developing a suite of alternative navigation technologies to combat increasing disruption of GPS signals, intentional and unintentional, with the first products planned to be on the market in 2023. “Alternate navigation is technology that utilizes non-inertial sensors such as cameras, star trackers, radars and radios to provide position information that we can fuse with our inertial navigation sensors,” said Thandava Edara, Honeywell produce director for alternative navigation technologies. Norwegian regional airline Wideroe is looking to add up to five more De Havilland Canada DHC8-400s by 2023 and is considering another three Embraer E-Jets, although this depends on fuel prices. Wideroe operates 23 DHC8-100s, three DHC8-200s, four DHC8-300s, 10 DHC8-400s and three Embraer E190-E2s. Credit: Rob Finlayson

Daily Memo: Need Pilot Training Candidates? Show Them The Money

Ask the big pilots’ unions why some U.S. airlines, especially regional Part 121 operators, are having problems finding qualified flight crew members, and they’ll say it’s not a person-power problem, it’s a money problem. Put another way, airlines investing in their pilot workforce are faring just fine. Credit: Juan Silva / Getty Images

Decarbonization Prize Targets 100th Anniversary Of Lindbergh Flight

On May 21, 1927, Charles Lindbergh landed in Paris after completing the first solo, nonstop transatlantic flight, winning the $25,000 Orteig Prize and catalyzing the commercial aviation industry. Ninety-five years later, with aviation facing a growing sustainability challenge, the Lindberg Foundation and XPrize Foundation have come together to launch the Forever Flight Alliance with the goal of accelerating the decarbonization of aviation through incentive prizes.
