FAA Clears Return To Service For 52 United 777-200s

The FAA has issued final paperwork clearing the return to service of 52 Pratt & Whitney-powered Boeing 777-200s operated by United Airlines, ending a grounding that has constrained the carrier’s widebody capacity over the last fifteen months. The FAA’s grounding of the worldwide PW4000-powered 777 fleet went into effect in February 2021, following a series of engine fan blade out events—two involving United 777-200s in February 2018 and February 2021 and one on a Japan Airlines 777-200 in December 2020. Singapore Restarts Terminal 5 Development After Positive Outlook

After a two-year pause to review designs during the pandemic, Singapore is to restart development and construction of its massive Terminal 5 project as passenger numbers recover and the outlook for air transport looks more positive. Singaporean Transport Minister S Iswaran said at the inaugural Changi Aviation Summit that the country took the last two years to review the T5 design. Credit: Changi Airport Group

Daily Memo: What’s Next For Surging Air Fares?

Airline fares are getting more expensive, and industry watchers are divided on how much higher they could go before consumers cry uncle. Monthly airfares tracked in the U.S. by the Bureau of Labor Statistics surged 18.6% in April, the record for a single month, as carriers sought to recoup higher fuel, labor and airport costs by raising ticket prices. European Committee Approves Tougher Emissions Trading Reforms

A European Parliament committee has adopted draft laws that will allow for long-haul flights to be included in the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS); the phasing out of free allowances for airlines two years earlier than planned; and moves to monitor airlines’ non-CO2 emissions. Credit: DLR

TAP Exploring Further Network Opportunities In Brazil, Africa

TAP Air Portugal is continuing to look for new opportunities in its major long-haul markets Brazil and sub-Saharan Africa. The airline currently operates to 11 destinations in Brazil, one of its long-standing traditional overseas markets. “TAP is really the international airline for Brazil with the most significant offer,” TAP CEO Christine Ourmières-Widener told Aviation Daily in an interview. Rising Demand Helps Drive Philippine Airlines’ First-Quarter Profit

Philippine Airlines (PAL) is managing to achieve a relatively quick financial turnaround thanks to the effects of its Chapter 11 restructuring in 2021 and consistent improvements in demand. PAL said stronger demand is helping its revenue, with borders having reopened in the Philippines and in many of the carrier’s key overseas markets. Credit: Joe Pries

Wizz Air Seeks AOC For New Malta Subsidiary

ULCC Wizz Air plans to open a subsidiary carrier in Malta, targeting an October 2022 launch. Hungary-based Wizz Air said it has submitted an application to EASA for an air operator’s certificate (AOC) for the subsidiary, to be called Wizz Air Malta. Lessons Must Be Learned From Pandemic, Air Transport Leaders Say

The air transport industry and officials have called for the tighter harmonization of protocols and health policies governing global air transport as commercial aviation returns to normalcy. Senior executives at the Changi Aviation Summit in Singapore also said lessons learned during the pandemic should be channeled into building up resilience in case of future disruptions.
