Alaska Airlines Launches Pilot Academy Amid Regional Shortage
Alaska Airlines and its regional subsidiary Horizon Air have launched a new flight academy in the Pacific Northwest, part of an effort to address a national shortage of commercial airline pilots. The new initiative—launched in partnership with Oregon-based Hillsboro Aero Academy—will create a new flight school to feed into Alaska’s pilot pipeline.

Air Transat Chief Reveals Concerns About WestJet-Sunwing Deal
Air Transat has reservations about its new codeshare partner WestJet pursuing an acquisition of Canadian tour operator Sunwing. On March 2, WestJet announced plans to purchase Sunwing Vacations and Sunwing Airlines. Once the transaction closes, a new tour operating business will be created under the WestJet Group.

TSA Extends Current U.S. Mask Mandate Another Month
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has extended its mask mandate for U.S. aircraft and public transportation until April 18. TSA said the extension was at the recommendation of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The current mandate expires on March 18.

Embraer Recovery Driven By Commercial, Services, Executive Jets
Embraer expects to expand output both in its commercial and executive jet businesses in 2022 in an effort to compensate revenue shortfalls in its struggling defense business, hit by a reduction of Brazil’s KC-390 military transport order. According to Embraer CEO Francisco Gomes Neto, Embraer is targeting 60-70 commercial aircraft and 100-110 executive jet deliveries in 2022.

Status Of BOC Aviation’s Russia-Based Assets Unclear
Singapore-based lessor BOC Aviation is uncertain of the fate of its 18 aircraft in Russia following the global clampdown on Russian commercial and business aviation-related activities.The lessor does not have any aircraft leased or based in Belarus, Moldova or Ukraine.

Daily Memo: Reopening Puts India On Path To International Recovery
With India’s domestic capacity rebounding strongly as the latest wave of COVID-19 cases recedes, airlines can now look forward to gains in international operations as the government moves to lift flight restrictions. India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation on March 8 confirmed that all scheduled international flights will be allowed to resume from March 27. This follows an earlier step in February to remove quarantine requirements for most inbound travelers.

Deutsche Aircraft, H2fly Launch Work On Hydrogen-Powered D328
Deutsche Aircraft and German hydrogen propulsion specialist H2Fly have begun work under a project to modify a Dornier 328 regional turboprop with a zero-emission hydrogen-electric powertrain. The demonstrator aircraft is planned to fly in 2025

Singapore Airlines Wins Contract To Operate DHL 777F Cargo Operations
Singapore Airlines (SIA) has secured a crew and maintenance agreement with DHL that will see the German logistics provider station five of its Boeing 777F fleet in Singapore. SIA will operate the aircraft on DHL’s behalf and provide maintenance services throughout the initial four-year period. This is the first time DHL is basing aircraft in Singapore.

New Pakistan LCC Fly Jinnah Unveils Brand Identity
Pakistan’s new LCC Fly Jinnah has revealed its brand identity as it works towards obtaining its air operator’s certificate (AOC). The startup, which is backed by Air Arabia as a minority partner, will initially be based in Karachi serving a range of domestic routes across Pakistan, before expanding its network internationally.

Emirates, Garuda Indonesia Launch Codeshare Partnership
The codeshare partnership of Dubai-based Emirates Airlines and SkyTeam member Garuda Indonesia launched March 9. Following the signing of an MOU by both airlines in November 2021, regulatory approvals have been secured to operate routes that are included under the codeshare partnership. Codeshare flights are open starting March 16.

FAA Finalizes Steps For Pratt-Powered 777 Service Return
The FAA has finalized rules mandating inspections and modifications for Pratt & Whitney-powered Boeing 777s, completing a year-long process to develop fixes that address issues spotlighted in three engine failures and get grounded aircraft back into service. Airworthiness directives (ADs) set for publication in the Federal Register by March 11 spell out new fan blade inspection protocols as well as engine nacelle modifications and inspections.

Lufthansa Technik Expects Return To Pre-Crisis Levels By 2023
Lufthansa Technik returned to profitability last year as earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) increased and the MRO provider foresees a return to pre-COVID-19 levels in 2023. The Hamburg-headquartered company saw EBIT rise to €210 million ($232 million) against an uptick in revenues by 7% to more than €4 billion last year compared to 2020 when it posted a €383 million loss.

Aftermarket Reacts to Ukraine Invasion
Despite an encouraging 2021 for Lufthansa Technik in which it bounced back into profit, the German MRO provider has warned about headwinds from the Ukraine crisis. Like other aviation service providers from the European Union, sanctions prohibit Lufthansa Technik from doing business with Russian airlines and companies.
