Aviation Daily Roundup: June 06, 2022

June 07, 2022

Delta Air Lines Opens New $4B LaGuardia Terminal

Delta Air Lines’ new $4 billion terminal at New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA) partially opened June 4, marking another milestone in the revamping of the airport. Construction on LGA’s Terminal C—a joint project between the state of New York, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and Delta—was accelerated during the pandemic as air traffic plummeted. The terminal will be fully completed in 2024, two years earlier than originally anticipated, when Terminals C and D will be consolidated into the new Terminal C. Credit: Delta Air Lines

Vietnam Airlines To Introduce Regional Jets By 2023

Vietnam Airlines is evaluating the Airbus A220 and Embraer E190/195 regional jets as part of fleet renewal plans to replace its retiring ATR 72 turboprops. The flag-carrier is also looking to expand its post-pandemic route network in India. Kolkata (CCU) and Mumbai (BOM) have been identified as potential new destinations. Singapore State Investor Targets Decarbonization

Singaporean state investment company Temasek has committed an initial $5 billion to launch GenZero, an investment platform dedicated to accelerating decarbonization globally. Targeted areas include carbon capture and sequestration and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Credit: Neste

JetBlue Boosts Spirit Airlines Bid Before Shareholder Vote

JetBlue Airways sweetened the terms of its bid to acquire Spirit Airlines, part of an effort to win over Spirit’s shareholders ahead of a fast-approaching vote on whether to merge with Frontier Airlines. The revised offer raises JetBlue’s reverse break-up fee—which would compensate Spirit’s shareholders in the event the deal falls through on anti-trust grounds—to $350 million, from $200 million previously. Daily Memo: Aftermarket’s Recovery Detouring From Routine

The aftermarket’s recovery is well underway, but it’s not exactly a routine bounce-back. The conventional wisdom of maintenance spending trailing flight activity by six months or so isn’t holding up. Instead, the mass slowdown in passenger activity that hit most of the globe in 2020 and 2021—and lingers in some sectors today—led operators to defer maintenance or simply stop spending. Heathrow, Helsinki Airports Expand Facilities In Recovery Ramp-Up

London Heathrow Airport plans to return the last of its four terminals to operational use on June 14, while Helsinki Airport will combine its two terminals into one on June 21. Expansion of the Finnish capital’s airport is a €1 billion ($1.1 billion) 10-year project. A new terminal extension was opened to passengers in December 2021 with the inauguration of a new arrivals hall and parking hall. The second phase was completed at the end of May 2022, when the new check-in hall and its security control were put into service. Credit: Heathrow Airport

Hydrogen, SAF Neck-And-Neck In DLR Study

Aircraft concepts using hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) are in a neck-and-neck race at the midpoint of a German research project to develop designs for climate-neutral commercial airliners that could be operational by 2035. Launched in 2020, German aerospace center DLR’s EXACT project (for Exploration of Electric Aircraft Concepts and Technologies) has developed concepts for regional, short- and medium-haul aircraft with a range of drivetrain options: distributed hybrid-electric, hydrogen fuel-cell and direct combustion of hydrogen or SAF. KLM Restores Operations After Halting Inbound Schiphol Flights

Dutch carrier KLM is restoring operations at its Amsterdam Schiphol home base, after cascading operational problems forced it to halt inbound European flights to the airport on the afternoon of June 4. Schiphol airport has been particularly hard-hit by staff shortages and has seen huge queues in recent weeks, with many passengers missing their flights after lengthy delays at check-in and security. China’s Pantuo Aviation Flies Subscale eVTOL Air Taxi

Chinese startup Pantuo Aviation has conducted the first free-hover flight of a half-scale model of its planned Pantala Concept H ducted-fan electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) air taxi. The remotely piloted Pantala T1 technology demonstrator is being used to prove the feasibility of the tandem-wing, ducted-fan distributed propulsion system planned for the full-scale Concept H. Brazil Continues To Attract AAM Efforts With New Partnership

Brazil continues to be a major player in advanced air mobility (AAM) and now has a new partnership to address the overall AAM ecosystem. The partnership plans to define vertiport design requirements and locations and study additional requirements to establish electrical vertical takeoff and landing operations in Brazil. Lessors Azorra, Sirius Acquire 44 Aircraft

In two separate deals, U.S. lessor Azorra has bought 37 aircraft formerly owned by Nordic Aviation Capital (NAC), while Abu Dhabi-based Sirius Aviation Capital Holdings has acquired seven mid-life narrowbodies. On June 5, Fort Lauderdale-headquartered Azorra announced that it had added 29 Embraer E-Jets and seven turboprops—a mix of ATRs and De Havilland Canada Dash 8-400s—to its portfolio. Qatar Airways, American Airlines Expand Codeshare

Qatar Airways and American Airlines plan to expand their strategic alliance with a new codeshare agreement, enabling American’s customers to book travel on Qatar Airways flights via Doha to and from 16 new countries. Pending any necessary government approvals, travelers will be able to book travel beyond Doha to final destinations in Ethiopia, Indonesia, Jordan, Kenya, Malaysia, Maldives, Oman, Pakistan, Seychelles, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Asia-Pacific Remains On Course For Strong Rebound, ACI Says

About 30% of the world’s passenger traffic growth over the next 20 years will come from just five counties in the Asia-Pacific region, delegates at Routes Asia 2022 in Da Nang have been told. Speaking on June 6, Airports Council International (ACI) Asia-Pacific senior expert in airport economics and ESG Ilia Lioutov said the organization’s latest forecasts show that global traffic will total some 18.9 billion passengers per year by 2040, up from 3.6 billion during 2020. British Airways Restarts Cargo-Only 787 Routes To Asia

British Airways (BA) has resumed two all-cargo Boeing 787-9 routes to Asia. The carrier, like many airlines, used passenger aircraft for cargo-only flights during the COVID-19 pandemic, but BA and other carriers have largely moved away from that strategy as passenger demand returned.
