Asia-Pacific Records International Traffic Growth

International passenger demand across the Asia-Pacific region climbed higher in April as the progressive relaxation of border restrictions stimulated business and leisure travel. According to figures released by the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA), the region’s carriers transported 4.8 million international passengers in April—a year-over-year increase of 272.9%. Demand rose to an average of 15.2% of the volumes posted in the equivalent pre-pandemic month of April 2019. Credit: Singapore Airlines

FAA Proposes GEnx-1B Fuel Hydraulic Line Swap

A proposed FAA airworthiness directive would require operators of GEnx-1B-powered Boeing 787s to replace fuel hydraulic lines to prevent risk of fuel leaks tied to the design of the current components. The draft directive, set for publication June 3, would require the modifications at the next shop visit. The work is based on a GE service bulletin released in February. Credit: Boeing

United To Invest $100M In Denver Pilot Training Center Expansion

United Airlines broke ground on a new building at its Denver Flight Training Center that will house additional simulators and training classrooms, part of an effort to hire and train thousands of new pilots in coming years. All told, the project is expected to cost around $100 million. United expects the new building will eventually house 12 advanced flight simulators that will train pilots on new-generation Boeing 737 MAX, 787 and Airbus A321neo jets. Credit: United Airlines

Airlines Call For Further Amendments To European Sustainability Legislation

Airlines are calling for amendments to proposed European environmental rules including those governing sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), after European Union transport ministers agreed on the latest package of legislation in the bloc’s Fit for 55 emissions reduction plan. The region is working to define the legal framework of its Fit for 55 plan, which was set out in July 2021 and aims to achieve a 55% reduction in emissions compared to 1990 levels by 2030, as a step on the way to net zero in 2050. The Ireland-based lessor said June 1 that during the restructuring process it had eliminated almost $4.1 billion of debt, while significantly enhancing its liquidity, with access to approximately $537M in additional capital to fund operations and growth.
