Qatar Airways Ready For Trial In Airbus A350 Dispute

The dispute between Qatar Airways and Airbus over fuselage surface degradation on A350s took another turn as the carrier said it was prepared for a trial while the OEM said the airline had mischaracterized a recent court ruling. The two parties are at odds over surface degradation on more than 20 of Qatar Airways’ A350s dating back to 2020. The latest statements came after a London court’s May 26 ruling in which both sides saw cause for celebration. Credit: Qatar Airways

Delta Air Lines Sees A Place For The 737 MAX In Its Fleet

Delta Air Lines has been working with Boeing on potentially adding the 737 MAX aircraft to its fleet, company CEO Ed Bastian says. During the Bernstein Strategic Decisions conference on June 1, Bastian fielded a question about whether there is a role for the MAX in Delta’s fleet. Credit: Delta Air Lines

EASA Issues More Proposed A321XLR Special Conditions

Newly proposed EASA regulations for the Airbus A321XLR include ensuring rear center tank fuel vapor does not ignite for at least 5 min. when the tank is exposed to an external ground fire—one of several points in the “special conditions” that address cabin evacuation safety during an off-aircraft fire. The draft, issued June 1, covers one of three significant issues presented by the A321XLR’s range-extending “conformal” rear center tank (RCT), meaning it shares boundaries with the fuselage skin. Southwest Invests In Producing SAF From Agricultural Waste

Southwest Airlines has invested in startup Saffire Renewables as part of a U.S. Energy Department-backed project to produce sustainable available fuel (SAF) from agricultural waste. Saffire plans to produce low-carbon ethanol from corn stover that will then be upgraded to renewable jet fuel. Credit: D3MAX

Daily Memo: No, Republic Is Not Asking To Lower 1,500-Hr. Rule

The petition from Republic Airways to halve the number of flight hours needed by graduates of its pilot training academy to qualify as first officers has brought the simmering national debate surrounding pilot training standards to a boil. The federally mandated 1,500 flight hour threshold for U.S. first officers is a touchy subject, to put it lightly. Proponents say the policy has contributed to the country’s stellar aviation safety record over the last decade, while detractors blame it for fueling a nationwide commercial pilot shortage. Porsche To Help Eve Define eVTOL Production System

Embraer’s urban air mobility (UAM) spinoff Eve has engaged Porsche Consulting to help define the supply chain, manufacturing and logistics strategy for its electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicle. Because the battery-powered aircraft will have limited range and cannot be ferried to customers as are Embraer’s regional and business jets, Eve is planning to manufacture vehicles in an Embraer facility in Brazil as kits that will be shipped to local plants in key markets for final assembly and delivery.

Hawaiian Airlines Boosts Forecast As Revenue Momentum Builds

Hawaiian Airlines has upgraded its near-term outlook as demand continues to strengthen, particularly in the U.S. domestic market. The airline reported on May 31 that improving domestic yields are driving up revenue more quickly than anticipated in the current 2022 second quarter (Q2). Hawaiian’s previous outlook was issued on April 26. Credit: Rob Finlayson

Airbus Executive To Take Over As CEO Of EVTOL Startup Lilium

Leadership change continues across the advanced air mobility industry as more manufacturers move into the certification and production phases, with Lilium co-founder Daniel Weigand stepping aside as CEO as the German startup looks ahead to delivery and operation of its electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing (eVTOL) air taxis. Seasoned Airbus executive Klaus Roewe will join Lilium as CEO on Aug. 1. Weigand will continue as the startup’s chief engineer for innovation and future program and as a board member. Credit: Lilium

ULCC Flair Triumphant On Canadian Ownership Decision

Flair Airlines is Canadian, the country’s transport adjudicator announced June 1, ending a challenge to the ULCC’s right to fly in Canada. The Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) investigated Calgary-based Flair after questioning its relationship with U.S. investor 777 Partners, to which Flair turned for financial support in the depths of the pandemic crisis. Vietnam's Bamboo Airways Eyes Further Long-Haul Expansion

Bamboo Airways is exploring the possibility of adding further long-haul routes to its network as the Vietnamese leisure airline gears up to launch a third nonstop service to Europe. The carrier, which earlier this year began regular scheduled flights from Hanoi (HAN) to Frankfurt (FRA) in Germany and London Heathrow (LHR), plans to open a second route to Frankfurt from June 16. Report: China Bans Russian Airlines Operating Western-Leased Aircraft

Russian news outlet RBK News is reporting that China has banned Russian carriers flying Western-leased Boeing and Airbus aircraft through its airspace due to the uncertain legal status of these aircraft. Lessors have terminated agreements with Russian airlines following the invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24. Russia, in turn, seized the aircraft leased from Western lessors and re-registered them. Cathay Pacific, Lufthansa Cargo Add Swiss WorldCargo To JV

Cathay Pacific and Lufthansa Cargo are adding Swiss WorldCargo to their joint venture, in the latest cargo deal for a sector that has gained increased importance as a revenue generator since the start of the pandemic. Cathay and Lufthansa Cargo already work closely together on international routes through their respective hubs in Hong Kong and Germany, while cargo handling in Hong Kong is coordinated under one roof at the Cathay Pacific Cargo Terminal at Hong Kong International Airport, the partners said.
