Aviation Daily Roundup: April 7, 2022

April 08, 2022

JetBlue Confirms Boston-London Entry

Competition between Boston and London is set to further intensify from July when JetBlue Airways begins the first of two daily routes between the cities. The airline’s long-awaited entry to the market will see it open a Boston Logan (BOS)-London Gatwick (LGW) route on July 19, followed by a nonstop service between BOS and London Heathrow (LHR) on Aug. 22. Emirates Expects No Boeing 777-9 Deliveries Before 2025

Emirates Airline President Tim Clark does not expect the airline to receive its first Boeing 777-9 before 2025, representing a further two-year delay over current plans that creates a major capacity gap in the airline’s future network plans. Clark told Aviation Daily on the sidelines of Aviation Week Network’s CAPA Centre for Aviation Airline Leader Summit April 7 that he still cannot get firm answers from Boeing on the delivery plans for either the 777-9 or the 787-9. Strong Return Of Demand, But New Risk Factors Emerge

Two statements—“globalization will only ever increase” and “there is going to be an effect on globalization as we knew it”— made by Etihad CEO Tony Douglas and SAS CEO Anko van der Werff at the CAPA Centre for Aviation Leader Summit just about sum up what the industry is facing, now more than ever: an extremely uncertain outlook. Boosted by a strong return of premium demand, Etihad’s Douglas and Emirates Airline President Tim Clark continued to predict that the industry will return to 2019 levels of demand by the middle of 2023, with Clark cautioning that the Russia-Ukraine war could delay the recovery by some months. U.S. Lawmakers Propose No-Fly List For Unruly Passengers

Lawmakers in the U.S. House and Senate have introduced a bill that would create a federal no-fly list for airline passengers who assault flight attendants and crewmembers. The Protection from Abusive Passengers Act is the latest effort to curb the recent rise in violent confrontations between passengers and crew, often fueled by requirements around mask-wearing intended to slow the spread of COVID-19. Russia’s Pobeda Introduces Boeing 737NG Full Flight Simulator

Russian airlines are looking for ways to stay airborne despite Western sanctions. ULCC Pobeda, the country’s third largest airline, has opened its first independent pilot training facility. It includes a full flight simulator (FFS) for the Boeing 737NG, the only aircraft type operated by the airline. Credit: Pobeda

Consolidation Key To Improving African Connectivity

The airline industry in Africa needs a period of consolidation if the continent is to overcome its connectivity challenges, according to Kenya Airways CEO Allan Kilavuka. Speaking at the CAPA Leader Summit in Manchester, England, Kilavuka said that the fragmented nature of the sector is due to protectionist measures and is stifling economic growth in the region. Daily Memo: South Korea Removes Quarantine, But Other Constraints Remain

South Korea has joined the list of Asia-Pacific countries that have taken major steps to relax international travel restrictions related to COVID-19. While this will make visiting South Korea easier, there are still significant obstacles that will complicate near-term demand recovery. Credit: Jung Yeon-Je / AFP / Getty Images

Philippine Airlines Back In Black After Chapter 11 Proceeding

Aided by a Chapter 11 debt restructuring and increase in cargo operations, Philippine Airlines (PAL) owners PAL Holdings are profitable again as the carrier looks to ramp up capacity following the country’s reopening. PAL is currently working toward reducing its current fleet of 86 to a long-term fleet size of 70. Nine aircraft will be returned to lessors in 2022. Credit: Joe Pries

Eurocontrol Sees Traffic Nearing Pre-Pandemic Levels By August

Eurocontrol expects its network traffic to recover to 89% of 2019 levels by August and rise to 92% by year-end 2022. The network manager set out the estimate of steady growth in its latest traffic scenarios publication, for April to December 2022, released April 7. Credit: Armando Babani / AFP / Getty Images

U.S. Commerce Department Slaps Wider Sanctions On Three Russian Airlines

The U.S. Commerce Department sanctioned three Russian airlines—Aeroflot, Azur Air and UTair—on April 7, denying businesses or governments from doing any business with the carriers for at least 180 days. The Temporary Denial Orders expand the U.S. government’s previously announced sanctions on only U.S.-origin parts and aircraft to cover any business with the airlines over the next 180 days. Europe’s Carbon Market Too Soft On Airlines, Campaign Group Says

Europe’s Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) is too generous to airlines and free carbon allowances to the aviation industry should be curbed, Brussels-based campaign group Transport & Environment (T&E) said in an April 6 report. T&E said it had analyzed new data that showed Europe’s 10 most polluting airlines received free CO2 permits worth €683 million ($744 million) under the EU’s ETS in 2021. Credit: Joe Pries

Colombia’s Viva Air Cleared For Buenos Aires Routes

Colombian ULCC Viva Air has been given the green light by Argentina’s National Civil Aviation Administration (ANAC) to commence scheduled service to the country. Approval has been granted for seven flights per week to the Argentinian capital Buenos Aires from both Bogotá (BOG) and Medellín (MDE). Credit: Airbus
