Boeing Shifts First 777-9 Deliveries To 2025

Boeing has taken the decision of shifting its first 777-9 deliveries into 2025 from the end of 2023 and is pausing production of additional airframes through 2023 in an effort to avoid building up an even larger inventory. The company is making the move as it focuses on resuming 787 deliveries as well as 737 MAX production and certification. Boeing expects to restart 787 deliveries “in the near term.” Credit: Boeing

FAA, Airlines Schedule Meeting To Review Florida Congestion

The FAA will host a two-day meeting with a group of U.S. airlines in early May to discuss ways to increase the efficiency of busy airspace in Florida, following a spate of operational meltdowns there affecting JetBlue Airways, Spirit Airlines and others. Florida’s airspace has been plagued by numerous delays and cancellations in recent months, stemming from thunderstorms, air traffic control delays, increased operations in nearby military airspace and a stepped-up space launch cadence. Russia Has Seized 222 Leased Aircraft, Analysis Shows

Russian operators have seized 222 commercial and business-jet aircraft that belong to lessors, taking advantage of a government edict that permitted them to re-register the airframes to take ownership and get them on the country’s registry, an Aviation Week analysis shows. Not surprisingly, the majority are narrowbodies—including 73 Airbus A320ceos and 64 737 Next Generation variants that formed the backbone of the country’s fleet before its late February invasion of Ukraine. Daily Memo: Boeing To Face More Difficult Choices In MAX Fallout

Emirates Airline President Tim Clark recently voiced his strong frustration about not being able to get confirmed delivery dates for the Boeing 777-9, the first of which should long have been flying in Emirates colors by now. His estimate, judging from his conversations with Boeing management, was that the airline will receive the first few 777-9s in 2025.

Supply Chain Pressure Acute For Operators, Manufacturers

Companies throughout the commercial aerospace supply chain are re-examining everything from how they forecast demand to what they can handle in-house as part of broad efforts to mitigate increasing risk as passenger airline activity ramps up. Speakers on multiple MRO Americas panels here made clear that supply chain stability is emerging as the most significant threat to a steady recovery. Credit: Sean Broderick / AWST

British Airways Continues To Cut Flights In June

British Airways (BA) appears to be continuing to feel the operational pinch of COVID-19 absences, with further flight capacity being removed from the carrier’s planned June schedules. Over the past few weeks, several UK airlines including BA and easyJet have been forced to cancel flights because of staff shortages, driven by a national surge in COVID-19 cases. Credit: Joe Pries

Airbus, ITA Explore Urban Air Mobility In Italy

The push to establish urban air mobility (UAM) networks in Europe took a step forward April 27 with the signing of an MOU between Airbus and Italian flag-carrier ITA Airways to collaborate on UAM in Italy. Under the agreement, the two companies will explore the creation of tailored UAM services by identifying strategic use cases. Credit: Airbus Helicopters and Productions Autrement Dit

Finnair Wet Leases Aircraft To British Airways, Lufthansa

Oneworld carrier Finnair plans to outsource seven aircraft, sell another four plus other surplus aircraft, start accessing a €400 million ($427 million) government loan, and roll out a further €60 million in cost savings—all in an effort to mitigate the ongoing impact of the Ukraine-Russia war. Finnair’s normal business strategy pivots on connecting Europe and Asia, using direct routes that overfly Russia. Credit: Finnair

Cargo Conversions Surge, But So Do Challenges

The cargo aircraft conversion market is surging and expected to climb even higher, but the sector faces numerous headwinds as it seeks to meet rising demand. “Last year was a record for freighter conversions with about 110, and we still see upside,” said Mike Stengel, a senior associate at AeroDynamic Advisory and moderator of a panel on cargo conversions at Aviation Week’s MRO Americas show. Hawaiian Airlines Benefits From Strengthening Demand

Hawaiian Airlines saw encouraging signs of improvement in some of its international markets in the 2022 first quarter (Q1), and it expects further gains to occur in the second quarter. The carrier’s domestic capacity and demand strengthened in Q1. However, the return of more international travel will be the main factor determining its rate of recovery during the rest of 2022. Tata Group Looks To Complete AirAsia India Takeover

Air India has applied to buy out the remaining minority share in AirAsia India, which would give the Tata Group full control over the LCC subsidiary. Tata Group―which is the parent of Air India―currently holds 83.67% of AirAsia India. Air India is seeking approval from the Commerce Commission of India (CCI) to purchase the other 16.33%, which is controlled by the Malaysia-based AirAsia Group. Credit: Rob Finlayson

Poland Readies To Limit Warsaw Flights

Flights to Poland’s capital Warsaw could be severely limited from May 1 amid a dispute with air traffic controllers over pay and working conditions. The country’s government said that Warsaw Chopin (WAW) and the smaller Modlin (WMI) airport to the north of the city would only be operational between 9.30 a.m. and 5 p.m., which will lead to the suspension of about 300 flights a day.
