Aviation Daily Roundup: April 12, 2022

United Airlines Calls Out JetBlue, Spirit Over Newark Delays

United Airlines is blaming JetBlue Airways and Spirit Airlines for recent operational issues at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and has urged the FAA to intervene to improve gridlock at the airport. JetBlue and Spirit have both struggled to recover from the impact of thunderstorms in Florida in early April that forced them to cancel hundreds of flights which, compounded by existing staffing constraints, leading to a series of knock-on delays and cancellations. EasyJet Anticipates Up To $736M Fiscal First-Half Loss

EasyJet is expecting to post a headline pre-tax loss of £535-565 million ($697-736 million) for the six months ending March 31, as the LCC strives to return operations to pre-pandemic levels. Over the past week, high flight crew sickness rates have impacted easyJet’s operations, causing 4-5% of the airline’s 1,500 daily flights to be canceled. Credit: Nigel Howarth / Aviation Week

Daily Memo: Spirit AeroSystems Embraces Aftermarket As Part Of Diversification Push

Spirit AeroSystems was part of Boeing for 76 years, in between stints with Stearman and its current run as an independent supplier. It’s no surprise, then, that business from Boeing continues to be a major factor in Spirit’s success. But as the company found out, there’s such a thing as too much of a good thing. Credit: Boeing

Romanian Start-Up AirConnect Plans June Launch

New Romanian regional airline AirConnect is planning to launch this summer, deploying ATR 72s on domestic and leisure routes. Otopeni-based AirConnect, which is being set up by five private investors, is aiming to become one of the most significant turboprop operators in the region. Credit: AirConnect

Boeing 737 Delivery Pace Picks Up; Remains Behind 2022 Target

Deliveries of Boeing 737 MAXs edged out production in March with 34 official hand-overs against estimates of 31 new-aircraft rollouts. The slight imbalance reduced Boeing’s on-hand inventory of 737 MAXs, but the burn-down rate is still well behind what company executives discussed in January when providing an outlook for 2022. Boeing’s tentative target for the year is 500 737 MAX deliveries, or about 41 per month. March’s activity pushed total deliveries for the year to 81. Credit: Boeing

Brussels Waves Through Parker-Meggitt Merger With Conditions

Parker Hannifin has committed to divest its aircraft wheels and brakes business to secure European Commission (EC) approvals for its acquisition of UK-based aerospace supplier Meggitt. The EC’s antitrust investigation found that the takeover would reduce the number of suppliers for wheels and brakes for aircraft, but did not find competition concerns in other aerospace component markets. Austrian Airlines, OMV Cooperation Sees Rising SAF Production

Austria-based oil company OMV Schwechat Refinery, the country’s first producer of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), is increasing its production. Following the signing in late 2021 of a supply contract with Austrian Airlines, OMV’s first SAF was delivered in March to Vienna International Airport (VIE) for fueling Austrian Airlines’ aircraft. Flyadeal CEO Outlines Saudi Arabia’s Low-Cost Potential

Jeddah-based flyadeal is ramping up capacity in response to strong demand as Saudi Arabia continues to embrace the carrier’s low-cost offer. Speaking at the CAPA Airline Leader Summit held in Manchester, England, earlier this month, CEO Con Korfiatis said the potential of the kingdom’s aviation market is “mind-blowing,” highlighting that demand is recovering quickly following the pandemic. Indonesia’s Pelita Receives A320s, Prepares For Scheduled Service

Jakarta-based Pelita Air Services has taken delivery of its first pair of Airbus A320s as it prepares to commence commercial passenger service starting in mid-2022. The two A320s landed at Jakarta Airport (CGK) on April 11 and will undergo local certification prior to operation. Credit: Pertamina

Air France-KLM Firms Up Airbus A350F Freighter Order

Air France-KLM has converted the letter of intent it signed last December to buy four Airbus A350F aircraft into a firm order that includes purchase rights for an additional four of the new-generation freighters. Air France will operate the aircraft from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport. The A350F will supplement the airline’s existing freight capacity which comprises two Boeing 777F freighters and the belly holds of its passenger fleet. Credit: Airbus
