Zurich welcomes A380
Today (Thursday), Airbus carried out a successful trial run of Singapore Airlines' new A380 Singapore (SIN) to Zurich service – which starts operations on March 28th.
More than 22'000 spectators have witnessed the first landing of the Airbus A380 on the morning of 20 January 2010. The A380 demonstrator landed at 08:21 for airport certification tests in Zürich.
The superjumbo was welcomed by more than 22‘000 aviation enthusiasts as part of the public event "Welcome A380". The visitors gave the aircraft a great welcome and were able to view it close-up.
Until its departure on Thursday, various ground tests were undertaken to confirm obstacle clearances and to ascertain that its large dimensions don't cause any interference to landing aids.
Further, the compatibility of fueling, energy supply and de-icing infrastructure was reassessed. All test results have to be approved by the Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA), prior to certifying the airport to accept A380 airline operations.
Zurich will be the third European city and the 7th worldwide to receive the A380 in its network. The new service will replace SIA’s 12 weekly 777-300ER services.
