What’s On The Horizon For: Münster/Osnabrück Airport
Speaking to Routes in Seville during Routes Europe 2025 Münster/Osnabrück Airport outlined recent success with airline partners and how the northwest German airport plans to increase passenger numbers.
Münster/Osnabrück Airport (FMO) welcomed more than 1.2 million passengers in 2024, a 30% increase compared to the previous year. Having already surpassed pre-pandemic traffic levels in 2023, FMO remains one of the few commercial airports in Germany to have fully recovered to 2019 volumes.
Growth is being driven by strong leisure demand, with Condor and partner Marabu Airlines launching services to Palma de Mallorca in May 2024. Ryanair upgraded its Alicante route to year-round and is adding London Stansted and Malaga this summer.
Sundair opened a base for winter 2024 to serve the Canary Islands and Egypt, while Red Sea Airlines launched Hurghada flights in April 2025.
CEO Rainer Schwarz said the airport—open 24/7 with no slot restrictions—is targeting new leisure routes including Faro, Thessaloniki and the Greek Islands, alongside the return of business destinations like Vienna, Barcelona and Istanbul.
As one of the few airports in Germany operating 24/7 without slot restrictions—and with a catchment area of over 11.1 million people within a 90-minute drive—FMO is focused on expanding its destination portfolio, particularly in the leisure segment.
Speaking at Routes Europe 2025 in Seville, FMO CEO Rainer Schwarz told Routes that the airport is targeting new routes to destinations such as Faro, Thessaloniki, and several unserved Greek islands. On the business travel front, FMO aims to restore previously served routes including Vienna, Barcelona, and Istanbul, while strengthening its connectivity to key hubs like Zurich and Athens.
Taking part in numerous meetings at the event, Schwarz added: “There are a lot of airlines here, so we’ve had great business opportunities in a great venue.”
Having been a member of Routes 360 for just over a year, FMO actively utilizes the platform to enhance airport visibility and share incentives with airlines. Expanding awareness of recent success and route opportunities, FMO has uploaded potential services and latest developments to its Routes 360 profile.
