Visit the Flying Eye Hospital at World Routes

During this year’s World Routes event Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) will host the ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital which will be displayed at Al Bateen Executive Airport. The converted DC-10 aircraft, which is the World’s only flying ophthalmic surgical and training hospital, will be available for delegate tours during the event week.

ORBIS is a non-profit global development organisation whose mission is to eliminate avoidable blindness. ORBIS is dedicated to preserving and restoring the sight of people in some of the poorest communities in the world by providing the tools, training and technology necessary for local eye care teams to restore the sight of their communities.

The ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital is a unique international development tool. The DC-10 aircraft has been converted to hold a classroom, operating theatre, recovery room and sterilisation unit. Volunteer pilots, mechanics, surgeons, nurses, biomedical engineers and anaesthetists join the plane on its training missions restoring sight and opportunity.

Karen Jaques, Head of Corporate Partnerships at ORBIS commented: “ORBIS is looking forward to demonstrating how our Flying Eye Hospital assists in the training of eye care teams in developing countries to Routes delegates. ADAC’s support in hosting the ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital at Al Bateen Airport is extremely generous and we are grateful for the opportunity to showcase our sight-saving work in Abu Dhabi.”

As our official charity partner, Routes is working with ORBIS to raise funds for the next generation Flying Eye Hospital. The new MD-10 aircraft will fly further, for longer and with greater efficiency housing state-of-the-art medical equipment in an even more effective setting.

Phil Callow, CEO of UBM Aviation has kick started the fundraising process for the new and improved Flying Eye Hospital with a donation of £10,000 from UBMA. This generous donation is leading the way for other Routes delegates to get involved and contribute to this worthwhile cause.
