A hydrogen fueling station will be built at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) for cars and trucks serving the airport.

The station will mark the first public refueling site for vehicles with hydrogen fuel cells in the province of Ontario and only the sixth overall in Canada, according to the Canadian government. The YYZ fueling station will be financed via a C$1 million ($750,000) investment from the Canadian government. 

Canadian firm Carlsun Energy has been selected to build, own and operate the fueling station. Carlsun President Jason Van Geel says in a statement that it is “imperative that we start deploying hydrogen infrastructure in transportation corridors.”

YYZ notes the station “will be capable of refueling light-duty vehicles and transport vehicles, and is integral to Toronto Pearson's leadership in building clean energy solutions.” Airport CEO Deborah Flint adds: "Toronto Pearson, as an economic and aviation hub, is the ideal location for Ontario's first public hydrogen filling station for light and heavy-duty vehicles.”

The fueling station will be available to any vehicles serving the airport. YYZ has indicated it will be buying hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicles for the airport’s own ground fleet.
