Thai AirAsia X will relocate all flight operations back to Bangkok Don Mueang Airport (DMK) from October, moving from its current base at the Thai capital’s Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK).
The long-haul LCC says the switch will create “more opportunities for connections to the larger AirAsia networks, both domestic and international, while providing visitors more convenient access to inner Bangkok.”
Thai AirAsia X previously operated all flights from DMK until March 2020 at the onset of the pandemic. After suspending passenger operations for more than two years, the carrier moved all service to BKK once flights resumed in June 2022.
“The return of Thai AirAsia X to Don Mueang Airport is a homecoming,” Thai AirAsia X CEO Tassapon Bijleveld says. “We will be joining the strong and extensive AirAsia network, which has a domestic market share of over 40% in Thailand and a vibrant international network that encompasses Greater China, India and South Asia, Asean and Japan for a total of 93 routes served by 1,250 flights a week.”
The transfer is being coordinated with Airports of Thailand and the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand, which will also facilitate the process. It affects routes to Osaka, Nagoya, Sapporo and Tokyo Narita in Japan; Seoul; Shanghai; and Sydney.
Additionally, flights to Sydney will be temporarily suspended from Aug. 1 through Nov. 30 as part of the relocation process. However, the carrier says in a statement that it “remains committed to the Australia market.”
“While this decision to suspend services temporarily is not taken lightly, the aim is to return again soon with an enhanced schedule and experience to better meet our guest demands for the best value fares to and from Australia,” the statement adds.
Thai AirAsia X currently operates a fleet of eight Airbus A330 aircraft, which will increase to 11 by the end of 2024. The airline expects to receive three to five new aircraft annually to serve the strategy of sustainable growth.
Meanwhile, Thai AirAsia has announced plans to launch service between DMK and Phu Quoc, Vietnam. Flights will start on Oct. 27 and be operated daily. Once service begins, the LCC will offer 77 flights per week to Vietnam, including a triple-daily service to Ho Chi Minh City.
