TAAG Angola Airlines will complete its transition to the new António Agostinho Neto International Airport (NBJ) on Oct. 19, officially moving all remaining operations from Luanda’s 4 de Fevereiro International Airport (LAD). The relocation marks the final stage of a phased process.
Located about 26 mi. from downtown Luanda in the Bom Jesus area of Icolo e Bengo Province, NBJ is designed to handle up to 15 million passengers and 130,000 tons of cargo annually. The facility features two runways—measuring 13,780 ft. and 12,467 ft.—as well as a passenger terminal, hotel, retail areas and restaurants.
TAAG says the move will consolidate its operations into a single hub, improving efficiency, fleet management and passenger experience. The transition also supports Angola’s strategy to establish Luanda as a key air transport hub for Southern Africa.
From Oct. 19, all TAAG flights to Lisbon, Porto, São Paulo, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Lagos, Windhoek, São Tomé, Maputo, Nairobi and Havana will depart from and arrive at NBJ. Domestic routes, along with services to Brazzaville and Kinshasa, are already operating from the new airport.
“For the airline, consolidating flight operations into one single airport provides significant operational efficiency, fleet management synergies and improved customer experience,” TAAG says in a statement.
Constructed by China’s AVIC, the 43-hectare, state-owned airport has been in development for more than a decade. According to OAG Schedules Analyser data, TAAG currently offers about 6,657 weekly departure seats from NBJ and 9,559 from LAD.
