Strategic Airlines Drops Port Hedland to Bail Connection

Strategic Airlines is to “reluctantly withdraw” it’s Port Hedland – Denpasar flight from March 23 claiming that “constraints” had impacted the commercial viability of the route. The carrier inaugurated services on the route on August 3, 2010 and had utilised an Airbus A320 equipped with 12 Business Class and 144 Economy seats. However, according to Damien Vasta, Head of Commercial, Strategic Airlines, Due to infrastructure constraints at the airport that impact the efficiency of border control processing, it had been prevented from selling any more than 100 seats per flight.

“We were aware of this mandatory cap on capacity at the time we commenced flying the route but were confident infrastructure improvements could be made to accommodate greater international passenger numbers through the airport,” he said. “This has been a difficult decision and one we have not taken lightly, especially as these flights had been popular with the local community taking advantage of a direct route to Bali.”

Strategic Airlines will continue to serve Port Hedland from Brisbane and has modified its timetable on the route to better suit the travelling needs of those in the resources sector. It will also introduce a twice-weekly Brisbane – Denpasar link from March 19, operated by an A330 configured with 30 Business Class and 243 Economy seats. Bali has always been of the most popular international destinations for Brisbane holiday-makers due to its affordability but most airlines offer a no-frills service on what is a three hour sector. By using a widebodied airliner, Strategic will attempt to offer customers a full-service offering but at affordable fares.
