South African Regional Airport: KMIA - Up For Sale and Ready For New Challenges

Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA) has proven it can rise to any challenge after successfully handling 83.5% more passengers during the FIFA World Cup 2010 than in the corresponding period in 2009.

By employing additional staff, as well as special police and emergency services, KMIA was able to comfortably meet the requirements of the World Cup's players and fans.

Marius Nel, General Manager, reported that during the World Cup KMIA "experienced no problems whatsoever. Air Traffic control operations were smooth, as were all other passenger and security services".

The airport, which serves as the gateway to Kruger National Park is up for sale and is eager to further strengthen its position in the African market.

Demand for KMIA's services during the World Cup grew substantially. During the event, the number of inbound passengers a day increased exponentially and the number of flights arriving each day doubled.

With direct access to the Kruger National Park and a significant leisure potential within the region, KMIA is well-positioned to tap into a greater share of the low-cost carrier market, as well as stimulate established traffic flows to KMIA from gateways such as Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.
