The low-cost carriers have both announced new bases at Rome-Fiumicino and Brussels Airport from next spring.

Vueling will launch its new base at Brussels in May, alongside seven new routes to Rome, Lisbon, Porto, Venice, Ibiza, Palma Mallorca and Santiago de Compostela.

Ryanair will open its Brussels base – the carrier’s second in Belgium – two months prior to this.

The Irish LCC will base four aircraft at the airport and launch 10 new routes.

With the exception of Santiago, Ryanair will stake a claim in all of Vueling’s newly announced routes from Brussels, plus services to Alicante, Barcelona, Malaga and Valencia.

Ryanair also announced its intentions to launch three new domestic routes – Catania, Palermo and Lamezia – and base six aircraft at Rome-Fiumicino in the coming weeks.

It plans to eventually move six other domestic services – Alghero, Bari, Brindisi, Cagliari, Comiso and Trapani – from where they currently served at Rome-Ciampino to Fiumicino, opening up the former for new international routes.

The announcement came just days after Vueling revealed it would open a Fiumicino, with 24 routes from next summer.

The IAG-owned carrier plans to operate to Amsterdam, Athens, Corfu, Dubrovnik, Malta, Munich and Prague, among others.
