Darwin International Airport (DRW) is seeking to expand its international network, capitalizing on its strategic location at the northern edge of Australia and proximity to some of Asia's largest aviation markets.
Serving the Northern Territory's capital, DRW handles almost 2 million passengers annually and provides an important gateway for both domestic and international travel. Its location places Darwin closer to several major Southeast Asian cities than to some of Australia's largest population centers, giving the airport a distinctive role in connecting northern Australia with Asia.
OAG Schedules Analyser data shows Singapore is DRW’s largest international market by scheduled capacity during the northern summer 2026 season, with about 48,500 departure seats. Dili ranks second with almost 32,500 seats, followed by Bali with more than 30,000, and Guangzhou with 4,700.
The expansion of Dili came after Aero Dili commenced first ever flight to Australia earlier this year, launching a new service between the Northern Territory and Timor-Leste.
Domestic connectivity remains central to DRW's network. OAG data shows Brisbane is the airport's largest route by departure capacity during summer 2026, offering about 129,500 seats, followed by Melbourne with almost 119,000 and Sydney with approximately 108,500. Adelaide and Perth round out the five largest domestic markets.
In August, Airnorth announced plans to increase frequencies between Darwin and Tennant Creek, providing additional capacity and schedule flexibility for both residents and visitors.
DRW is now looking to build on its existing network by securing further nonstop links across Asia-Pacific.
