Pafos Airport Expands Capacity As Airlines Add Routes to the UK, Germany, Poland and Greece
Our Route Opportunities feature explores the latest unserved and underserved routes promoted through Routes 360, providing supporting information for airline network planners to consider and capitalize on.
Pafos International Airport (PFO), Cyprus’ second gateway, attracting mainly leisure traffic, is recording sustained traffic growth as a major capacity expansion moves into its next phase. The airport, managed and operated by Hermes Airports, handled 3.84 million passengers in 2025, representing a 6% year-on-year increase.
Growth is being underpinned by significant infrastructure investment. The second phase of PFO’s expansion is now underway, increasing the airport’s annual capacity to 5 million passengers.
While 2026 started with strong momentum that continued throughout the first months of the year, recent geopolitical developments rapidly reshaped market conditions, affecting passenger traffic and forward bookings to some extent. Hermes Airports response was immediate, engaging in continuous communication with airline partners and working closely with local stakeholders to strengthen the confidence to the destination. At the same time, a targeted incentive scheme was introduced to support weakened load factors and the capacity already planned, prior to these developments.
United Kingdom remains the main market for Pafos airport. . Commencing in March, Jet2.com launched operations to London Gatwick Airport (LGW) with a 2X-weekly service.
Another market expected to contribute to Pafos Airport’s growth is Poland, currently the airport’s second-largest market, with Ryanair adding capacity on routes from several Polish airports.
Connectivity with Germany, has also improved as Lufthansa increased its Munich service in April, from 1 to 3weekly flights.
Aegean Airlines has introduced a new three-weekly service to Athens, further strengthening connectivity with Greece alongside Ryanair’s expanded network to Athens and regional Greek airports.
With infrastructure development progressing and passenger demand trending upward, PFO is actively positioning itself for further network growth. The airport has uploaded multiple route opportunities on its Routes 360 profile to enhance air connectivity.
Opportunities include:
Germany: Germany remains one of the most important source markets for the Pafos region. Unserved opportunities include Frankfurt and Nuremberg while Berlin and Düsseldorf are identified as underserved markets, both currently operating 2X-weekly.
Italy: Italy is one of the developing markets for Cyprus during the last years. In total more than 100,000 total passengers travelled indirectly during the year between the two countries with both served routes, such as Rome and Milan and unserved routes such as Bologna and Pisa, positioned high on the list.
Spain: Spain stands out as a key opportunity, with Madrid ranking among the most searched unserved city pairs from both ends of the market. Beyond point-to-point demand, a direct Pafos–Madrid service could facilitate virtual connectivity to Portugal and Latin America through Spanish hubs, enhancing PFO’s wider network relevance.
Scotland: With growing interest in inbound leisure travel to Cyprus, PFO is seeking increased frequencies on existing Edinburgh and Glasgow routes to better match demand pattern
