ORBIS – 30 Years of Sight-Saving!

ORBIS has operated a Flying Eye Hospital since 1982. An innovative combination of medicine and aviation, it is an aircraft converted in a fully functioning eye hospital.

In 1994 the current DC-10 aircraft took over the mantle from a smaller DC-8. During this year’s World Routes event Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) will host the ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital, which is the World’s only flying ophthalmic surgical and training hospital, at Al Bateen Executive Airport and will be available for delegate tours during the event week. Here you will find out everything you need to know about the history of the ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital.

As maintenance and pilots for the DC-10 become harder to come by, this visit to Abu Dhabi marks its last to the Middle East. The third ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital, an MD-10, will take to the skies in 2013. As our official charity partner, Routes is working with ORBIS to raise funds for the next generation Flying Eye Hospital. If you would like to donate to help eliminate avoidable blindness around the world please click here and become part of the solution!

Visit the current ‘hospital with wings’ during your time in Abu Dhabi by registering for one of these exclusive delegate tours!
