New Star connection to SFO

Lufthansa subsidary, Swiss International Airlines, has announced that it will launch non stop scheduled service from its base in Zurich to San Francisco, California.

The new route will be inaugrated from June 2nd and will be operated on a six times weekly rotation with A340 equpment. There is currently no scheduled service between the city pairs, however San Francisco does have a number of European connections. It has 142 weekly flights to Europe with London Heathrow its number one location, with BA operating 30 weekly departures, United Airlines 24 and Virgin Atlantic 16 weekly services.

Lufthansa itself operates 22 weekly flights with 14 scheduled out of Munich and eight of Frankfurt, so there is already a significant amount of Star Alliance flights direct into Europe.

Swiss Intl Airlines does currently serve the west coast of the US and has access through Los Angeles LAX, with 15 weekly flights from Zurich. LAX does continue to be the major wesst coast gateway to Europe with 227 weekly departures, with BA operating the most weekly frequencies with a total of 39 weekly departures.
