Münster/Osnabrück Airport (FMO) is positioning itself for further expansion in European hub and leisure markets after posting one of Germany’s strongest traffic recoveries.

The airport handled more than 1.25 million passengers in 2025, representing growth of 26% compared with 2019 levels. The performance contrasts with Germany’s broader aviation market, which remains about 12% below pre-pandemic volumes.

Ryanair has expanded its presence at Münster/Osnabrück Airport (FMO), strengthening a partnership that began last summer with the launch of services to London Stansted and Málaga-Costa del Sol. The Irish carrier plans to build on that growth in 2026 by expanding existing routes to Corfu and Zadar, further reinforcing FMO’s leisure network. Approximately 20% of Ryanair’s passengers using FMO originate from the Netherlands, highlighting the airport’s cross-border catchment strength and its strategic location in northwest Germany.

Greece is an important market for FMO following Aeagan Airlines seasonal service to Heraklion, which operated from July to November 2025. Corendon Airlines and LEAV Aviation have capitalized on this untapped market with the launch of services to Heraklion in summer 2026.

The team at FMO hope to maintain momentum with opportunities including:

  • Kos - previously operated for over 25 years
  • Athens - among top unserved city routes
  • Thessaloniki - a high-demand leisure destination

Looking ahead, FMO continues to broaden its route portfolio. LEAV Aviation will base an aircraft at the airport, launching four new routes to Fuerteventura, Rhodes, Heraklion and Palma de Mallorca. Corendon Airlines and SunExpress have also increased frequency on existing services.

FMO’s network spans leisure, visiting friends and relatives (VFR) and business traffic, with an emphasis on high-demand, established markets. Among its priority targets is the Egyptian resort Hurghada, a route previously operated year-round that generated strong passenger volumes and is viewed as having renewed potential.

The airport operates without slot constraints and offers 24-hour availability, serving a catchment of approximately 11.1 million people within a 90-minute drive. Airport officials say this operational flexibility, combined with demonstrated demand across core European markets, positions FMO as an attractive option for airlines evaluating additional capacity in Germany.

As a member of Routes 360, the only digital platform dedicated to route development, FMO provides airlines with transparent data including historical performance, demand trends and market behavior.
