Milan Bergamo Airport (BGY) has entered a new phase of expansion, supported by infrastructure investment aimed at accommodating sustained international demand. The airport handled 16.5 million passengers in 2025 and is progressing with a €55 million ($65 million) terminal development to enhance capacity and passenger experience.
In November 2025, BGY opened its expanded departures terminal, adding 74,000 square meters of space and two additional non-Schengen gates. Further development is underway with the construction of a new Airport Service Centre, which will include a four-star Hilton Garden Inn and conference facilities, scheduled to open in winter 2026.
The Middle East has emerged as one of BGY’s strongest growth markets. In December 2025, flydubai increased its Dubai International (DXB) route to 2X-daily while Kuwaiti LCC Jazeera Airways will launch a new direct service to Kuwait City on May 20, operating 3X-weekly. The airport has identified core destinations within the region to serve rising passenger demand for transfer hubs including Hamad, Jeddah and Riyadh.
BGY handled more than 16.5 million passengers in 2025 and continues to attract strong interest from European carriers. Several routes were reinstated during the year, including Aeroitalia’s service to Comiso and Norwegian’s operations to Copenhagen, Bergen and Stavanger.
Ryanair resumed flights to Pescara in October and has announced plans to base two additional aircraft at BGY, further strengthening its presence at the airport. Wizz Air has also expanded its network, launching a 3X-weekly service to Sibiu during the winter schedule and increasing frequencies on its Sofia route from daily to 9X-weekly.
Beyond network expansion success, BGY recently received Level 4 certification under ACI’s ACA program. The certification recognizes the airport's efforts to reduce carbon emissions, including the installation of solar panels, deployment of energy monitoring systems and transition to LED lighting. The airport is on track to achieve 100% electrification of its ground support equipment by 2030 and aims to reach carbon neutrality by 2045.
BGY hosts over 30 airline partners flying to more than 140 destinations. Combined with enhanced infrastructure, strengthened rail access and accelerating demand, BGY is well positioned for capacity growth. As a member of Routes 360, the only digital platform dedicated to route development, BGY has outlined core targets across the Middle East, India, North America and Europe.
